Are you slave of money? (Part 2)
This post is a continuation of the last entry: Are you a slave of or controller of money?
In the last post, it was emphasized how you can be wearing a proverbial ball and chain if you’re living on debt. However, is it still possible to be a slave of money even if you’re not a slave to debt?
When your main concern and love is money and nothing else, your balance is disrupted, other matters fall by the wayside, and you have effectively made money your master.
Simple and extreme example: If you were to focus just on money but shunned food, drink, and sleep, you’d be dead.
There are those who may neglect their family, friends, and their health in the pursuit of more riches. Instead of building them up, overindulgence in the pursuit tears them down mentally, emotionally, and physically. Insatiable greed can result in frustration, stress, fear, broken relationships, and declining health.
In order to avoid becoming a slave of money, balance is necessary. Money should be kept in its proper place like everything else. For example, you might love a particular dessert. You might love it so much that you brag that you could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, if you made this dessert your only meal day after day, it would quickly become boring and unsatisfying … not to mention the empty calories that can accompany it. In a similar way, extra cash and the things it can buy are sweet. However, if it’s your only pursuit and love, then it will result in an empty, unsatisfying feeling.
Look for ways to give to others. Generosity can go beyond charitable donations – sincerely offer yourself to others. There’s an unbounded happiness that results from giving and making someone else happy. People need people. Spend time with those you love. Take the time to meet others and widen out. These are just some of the opportunities that abound when money isn’t your only focus.
If you make money your master and live only for it, it may be too late when you wake up to the need to change your priorities.
